Federal Election 1955 - the first general election

Federal Elections 1955 was the first general election. Purpose was to elect Members to the Legislsative Council of the Federation of Malaya (Majlis Perundangan Persekutuan). This was the initial step toward the independence of Malaya.

There were 52 seats contested. Parti Perikatan won 51 seats.

51 (98%) - Parti Perikatan
1 (2%) - Opposition

Hence, Parti Perikatan had almost full control in the Legislative Council.

This is the time BN/Perikatan had the most successful election, garnering the biggest majority of seats in the election. 98% of the seats were won by Perikatan.

Nonetheless, the majority of Members of the Executive Council were British officers; the High Commissioner held the power. We must take note this was 1955 when the Federation of Malaysia was NOT YET independent.
