PM Najib said NO to sports betting

It is good news to me that legalized sports betting is stopped, as announced Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, the Prime Minister.

I do realize that the Government (in particular the Federal Government) is need of more cash, more tax money. Sports betting business is very lucrative; sports fans are known to bet anything from RM50 to RM5,000. This is indeed HUGE business…probably bigger than 4-digit business. 4 digit punters often bet anything from RM10 to RM300; this figure is smaller compared to the potential in sports betting.

My objection to legalizing sports betting is because:
1) This will be seen as BN Government supporting, endorsing or promoting Sports Betting and Gambling.
2) MCA had stated their stand and reasons behind their stand. Concluded stand was to concur with legalized sports betting.
3) PR would have a new song to sing. BN, UMNO and MCA supports gambling, supports sports betting in open manner.
4) Legalized Sports Betting will be another Modal Politik for DAP, Keadilan and PAS.
5) Most importantly, Legalized Sports Betting may cause Najib to be the last Prime Minister from BN. Remember R-A-H-M-A-N.

PM: No sports betting licence
By ZUHRIN AZAM AHMAD newsdesk@thestar.com.my

KUALA LUMPUR: No sports betting licence will be issued as feedback from the public indicate a majority of people oppose such a move, said the Prime Minister.
[my comments: APPLAUSE to Mr Prime Minister for listening to the voice of the Rakyat.]

“It (the decision) is about political impact and from the (Islam) religion point of view.
[my comments: Christians and Buddhists also must NOT and should NOT gamble. No eomments about atheists as they are not guided by any God, gods or religion.]

“Our intention earlier was to control illegal betting which is said to worth close to RM10bil; as well as to curb the rampant crime activities resulting from this illegal trade,” said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
He added the issue was raised at the Umno supreme council meeting yesterday and the council members supported the decision unanimously.

Najib said Ascot Sports Sdn Bhd had been informed of the decision.
“They accepted it,” he said at a press conference at about 11.30pm after chairing the meeting.
As the approval given to Ascot earlier was “in principle” only, Najib said the issue of compensating the company did not arise as the Finance Ministry had the absolute right to withdraw the approval given.
Najib added the Government was not too concerned about the economic impact resulting from decision to say no to sports betting.
It is understood that the matter has been conveyed to Tan Sri Vincent Tan, the chairman and chief executive officer of Berjaya Corp. He is expected to issue a statement on Monday.
The Finance Ministry had on June 7 told Parliament that Government had yet to issue a sports betting licence to Ascot.
However, Berjaya Corp in a filing to Bursa Malaysia in May, informed about its acquisition of Ascot.
The company also told Bursa that Ascot was re-issued the licence by Finance Ministry to carry out sports betting operations with certain terms and conditions.

Be more vocal, MCA told

PONTIAN: MCA needs to be more vocal in addressing issues affecting the people, said party vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen.
Dr Ng said that this could be done if there was a change in the perception of the people towards the party.
“In the past, MCA has always been perceived as disunited, with internal squabbling and constant attacks among members.
“Our unity must be absolute to convince the people that MCA is able to help them,” she said.
Dr Ng said that the party should also be more vocal in issues that affect all communities, not only the Chinese.
“The issues should include justice and corruption. The current leadership is already doing this.

Should UPSR and PMR be scrapped? 44% disagreed. 22% agreed.

Should the UPSR and PMR exams be scrapped?
Out of 1,497 who voted in The Star's online Polls, 44% said NO to removing UPSR and PMR exams.
Only 22% agreed to the idea of scrapping UPSR and PMR.
I personally strongly disagree to notion of scrapping UPSR and PMR examinations.
UPSR and PMR are terminal assessments of educational performance of primary school students and lower secondary school students respectively.

MCA council to discuss exams

MALACCA: The MCA will announce its stand over the recent proposal to scrap the UPSR and PMR examinations only after discussing the matter at the presidential council meeting next week, said MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.
[My comment: This is good statement by the MCA Top Leader. MCA's official stand will be announced after further discussion and deliberation. No rush to issue a Policy Statement/]
The matter has to be discussed in detail before I can make a statement,” he said after launching the Tangga Batu MCA annual general meeting here yesterday evening.

The party’s views on the proposal would then be forwarded to the Education Ministry.
Dr Chua said it was also important for the Education Minister to find out why the quality of education was dropping.
“Is it because we have produced too many graduates without focusing on their quality?” he asked.
He added that the education system was exam-oriented and had its own weaknesses.
“The goal of education is not to produce bookworms.
“A person may do well in exams but it does not make him or her perfect in other aspects, such as in sports, the ability to communicate and interact, being creative including the shaping of character,” he added.

Barisan Nasional must remain united

Datuk Seri Najib had emphasized that BN must remain united. I think this is a good statement made by the PM, who is also the Chaiman of BN and President of UMNO.

As everyone knows, Pakatan Rakyat has been influencing people and preparing to win simple majority. PR’s ambition is getting bigger. PR is aiming to over the Government. Since they managed to win 5 States at 308 General Election (now reduced to 4 States), their ambition is getting BIGger. A lot of propaganda-oriented emails are forwarded with direct and indirect message….change the Government. In other words, to vote PR so that PR can rule the Federal Government.

It is time for all BN component parties to think, rethink, develop and implement strategies that will enable BN to be still in power after the next General Election.

It is crucial for BN component parties to make use of New Media as one of the means for propaganda. We know that PR had very successfully make use of New Media to propagate their cause. We know that our PM has been using YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and blog to publicise. As a result, the Rakyat’s degree of acceptance of PM has been rising.

MCA should also maximize the use of static website, dynamic website, blogsite, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, YahooGroup, GoogleGroup, and sms to win over….firstly, all MCA members, secondly, all the Chinese population, and thirdly, Malaysian in general.

BN component leaders should avoid quarrels, says MCA veep

KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional component party leaders should avoid quarrels and have mutual respect for one another given the current political scenario which is getting more complex, said MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Donald Lim Siang Chai.
“More importantly we must remain humble,” he said.

Lim was commentting on the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s call on Barisan component parties to stop quarelling among themselves.

Making the call at the opening of PPP’s 57th general assembly here on Saturday, Najib said the opposition wanted to take over the Government and it was important for the ruling coalition to remain united.

Lim said the MCA discussed the issue at a brainstorming camp for national leaders in Port Dickson on Friday.
“We feel that leaders in Barisan component should not comment too much on certain issues and it is unbecoming of them to attack each other through the mass media,” he told reporters after a meeting with board members of Memorial Tun Abdul Razak here yesterday.

It is a good move to harness ideas from all the Central Commitee of MCA, MCA Youth and Wanita MCA.

Remove UPSR and PMR? Remove the Terminal Assessment of Learning Performance?

How can we remove UPSR and PMR? (This is a wrong policy in terms of learning theories.)

UPSR is a terminal assessment of primary education. PMR is a terminal assessment of lower secondary education.

How are we going to measure the educational performance of primary school students with standardized exams throughout Malaysia? How are we going to evaluate the learning performance of lower secondary school students?

With no PMR, how are we going to stream the students into Science Stream, Arts Stream and Commerce Stream? We will have no unified yardstick to judge whether the student is suitable for Science stream or other stream.

Let us go to learning theories. One relevant learning theory is Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction.

According to Robert Gagne, there are nine events that activate processes needed for effective learning. Gagne believes all lessons should include this sequence of events:

Events:
1 Gain Attention
2 Inform Learner of Objectives
3 Stimulate Recall of Prior Learning
4 Present Stimulus Material
5 Provide Learner Guidance
6 Elicit Performance
7 Provide Feedback
8 Assess Performance
9 Enhance Retention and Transfer.

Source: http://ide.ed.psu.edu/idde/9events.htm

One of the 9 critical elements is ASSESS PERFORMANCE. Although his theory concentrated on specific learning lesson, I think this is applicable to the overall learning process.
In my opinion, ASSESS PERFORMANCE has been incorporated into Malaysian learning system for decades. Something good (which is based on worldwide accepted learning theory) should NOT be removed.

UPSR, PMR, SPM and STPM are the Terminal Assessment of Learning Performance.
UPSR – at end of Standard 6.
PMR – at end of Form 3.
SPM – at end of Form 5.
STPM – at end of Form 6 upper.

I do not deny that there are school-based exams in the form of term/semester exams. Term exam (or semester exam) is Interim Assessment (also known as continual assessment, or progressive assessment).

I conclude that UPSR and PMR remain very useful as Terminal ASSESSMENT of Learning PERFORMANCE of primary school students and lower secondary school students respectively.

PMR and UPSR exams may go
By HAMDAN RAJA ABDULLAH newsdesk@thestar.com.my

MUAR: The UPSR and the PMR examinations may be abolished to remove the pressure of an exam-oriented education system on schoolchildren, said the Education Minister.
Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the ministry was studying the change and urged scholars, educationists and various stakeholders to provide input.
“Several parties have voiced their views that the present system forces teachers and students to only focus on achieving excellent results in the examinations,” he said after opening the Pagoh Umno division delegates assembly yesterday.
Muhyiddin said that there were three public examinations — UPSR, PMR and SPM — in the 11 years of primary and secondary education, and this pressured schools, teachers and parents to want students to achieve excellent results.
“Parents also send their children for tuition just to see them excel in examinations,” said Muhyiddin.
He said the exam pressure was wrong and defeated the true purpose of sending the children to school.
“The main objectives of education is for children to gain knowledge in a holistic manner - where creativity, innovation and interaction thrive,” he said.
Muhyiddin said when the pressure was off to score As, teachers and students could focus on other life interests, including sports.
“Career-wise, it is also no longer enough just to pass with flying colours in public examinations. Our students also need to equip themselves with life skills and a strong grasp of general knowledge,” he said.
Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, the Education Minister in 2007, had also called for public feedback on the matter three years ago, saying that the ministry was “slowly moving in that direction with term-based assessment.”

Sharing of Power, Decision and Policy Making among BN Partners

Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek had boldly spoken. Bravo!!
Most Chinese in Malaysia could see that although MCA is the second biggest component in Barisan Nasional, UMNO has been playing Big Brother role. To the general public, UMNO has been dictating on countless policies. Some UMNO Leaders had also spoken sensitive without due consideration to MCA and the Chinese population, in particular during Pak Lah’s term as Prime Minister.
Barisan Nasional is a coalition of political parties, which was originated started in the form of Perikatan. Perikatan was a coalition of UMNO, MCA and MIC. Power sharing, decision making sharing, are policies making sharing are essential for effective coalition cooperation.
Consultative effort among the BN component parties should be made before a major policy change is done, especially if the policy may affect a certain ethnic group.
Yes, there should be more EQUALITY among the BN partners. UMNO should not appear to be domineering, simply because they win more seats, they are Malays.

Treat Barisan partners equally
By SARBAN SINGH newsdesk@thestar.com.my

PORT DICKSON: All component parties in Barisan Nasional must be treated as equal partners if the coalition wants its transformation process to work, said MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

Barisan leaders should also have mutual respect for one another, and their input given serious thought to show that no party is dominant in Barisan,” he added.
Dr Chua said this was important as some leaders tended to be insensitive to views made by leaders of other component parties.
“There is this perception that whatever decision made by one dominant party (in Barisan) must be accepted by the rest. The Opposition is very good at exploiting such issues and we (Barisan component members) are perceived as unequal partners.
“Barisan leaders must realise that the political landscape has changed and people have become more sensitive about their rights,” he told reporters at the end of a brainstorming camp for MCA national leaders here.
Dr Chua said since both the Prime Minister and his deputy were from Umno, there was always this question on how to accord mutual respect, and how important were the roles played by the other component parties in the coalition.
He added that the days of one party taking the lead and the others merely taking orders were over.
“We must always work as a team and our cooperation must be mirrored in everything that we do,” he said.
Dr Chua said that it was time all component parties were made to work together and given roles in every project or activity. Such cooperation, he added, should not only be seen during the general or by-elections.
He said the MCA also fully supported the need to transform the coalition, as suggested by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
On the MCA, he said critics should stop branding the party as one that only fought for the rights of the Chinese.
“Times have changed. We fight for the rights of every Malaysian, and it includes issues on education, job opportunities and the economy,” he said.
On the three-day camp attended by the party’s top hierarchy, MPs and state assemblymen as well as its national-level Wanita and Youth committee members, Dr Chua said several experts were invited to speak on issues such as the New Economic Model, new media, new voters and the direction of the party.
Dr Chua said the participants agreed to appoint a consultant to find ways to counter allegations made by the Opposition through new media.
“This is important as we have not been able to effectively counter the lies spread by the Opposition in the new media,” he said.

Say NO to wasting money on new Parliament building

When the news came out about a new Parliament building in Putrajaya which will cost RM800 million, there were lots of emails flying here and there opposing the move.

All of us know that our country is having some financial problem.
Government departments were told to reduce the budget, "berhemah" and so on. In yesteryears, there were so many retreats, workshops, seminars and meetings held at resorts and hotels. I know there has been a decline of all these...because government has slashed the budget.

The economy has been very soft since 4th quarter 2008. The construction sector does not seem to have adequate projects.

It is time not to waste money.

I am very happy that MCA had decided to ask the Government to rethink and cancel this project. RM800 million is wasteful for the current economic slowdown.

Why cut fuel subsidies (which will burden the Rakyat) and yet spend lavishly (RM800 million) for a luxurious Parliament buidling?
-----------

Press Statement by MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek on the proposed RM800 mil Putrajaya Parliament building

MCA President: No need for new RM800 mil Parliament-funds could be better utilized for rakyat

The Parliament House built in 1962 was one of the earliest landmarks in the country and is an institution by itself.

It is a heritage building which ought to be preserved not only as a heritage building but also be proudly occupied by Parliamentarians.

There is no need for a Parliament building costing RM800mil in Putrajaya which is a sheer waste of public funds which could be better utilized for projects benefiting the rakyat.

This is especially so when the Government is urging Malaysians to reduce expenditure to have a balanced budget.

The Government should reconsider its decision on the new building which should be considered as an optional project.

The need for Parliament to be relocated to Putrajaya is essentially to enable Cabinet members and civil servants to have easier access.

In comparison, the Westminster in the United Kingdom where the British Parliament House is located, is cramp but functional and fully utilized by British MPs. Moreover our existing Parliament House is much more comfortable, especially after its renovations.

New Media is the way to go

I am starting this blogsite on Sunday, June 20, 2010.

The purpose is to blog about issues that concern Malaysians.

Today is also the conclusion of a 3 day, 2 nights brainstorming session involving MCA Central Committee, MCA Youth Central Committee and Wanita MCA Central Committee.

One of the speakers had spoken about New Media. The President, Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, had concurred on importance of New Media, and appeared to be committed to use the New Media as one of the political publicity tools.

Dr Chua, yes, that is The Direction.

After all, at 308 general election, Keadilan and DAP had very successfully sent out countless SMS and emails....which is one of the factors leading to the overwhelming victory of Pakatan Rakyat. Pakatan Rakyat managed to win and established State Assembly in 5 states. PR also took most of the seats in Wilayah Persekutuan.
